The Stock Characters

There are many different types of characters in horror films. the main 6 are known as the 'Stock Characters' these are: the Wanderer, the jock, the popular girl, the final girl, pandora and the pervert. Each one of these Stock Characters playsan important role in the horror film, keeping it to the conventions of all horror films.

The Strangers

• The character that is new to a town/city ect. and is often believed to be the killer in the filmHe or she often comes to town around the same time as the murders begin in the filmThe other characters are often suspicious of this character.

The Wanderers

• The most curious charactersIs a thrill seeker. The person that wanders off and gets killed firstThe most naive character.

• The Popular Girls 
• The girl that has many friends Is normally the leader of the group eg. cheerleaders This girl usually falls in love or goes out with the jock characterShe also most likely dies in the filmShe normally has 2 sidekicks Eg. Buffy from Scary Movie.

• The Jock
• The jock is usually the stereotypical male that is popular and is in to sports etcOne of the most popular guysOften feels fearless and untouchable however they are often get killed. For example in final destination 3 the jock is loud and cocky and thinks that he is not able to die. He eventually dies.

The Final Girl

• The character that survives in the end of the filmThe most strong, smart and intelligent character in the filmShe is often the main target of the villain however she doesn’t get killed.

• Pandora
• This is a the character that is good looking which can be deceiving to the other charactersAre often the evil ones that are secretly up to something or can be the killers This is dramatic irony when the audience know that the character is bad but the other characters in the film do not.

The Pervert

• The pervert will usually go through any lengths to sleep with the girl he chooses. The pervert is shown in a negative light. The fact that the pervert harasses the girl leads him to be targeted by the villain. The pervert is usually one of the first stock characters to be killed by the villain.
